Raising Awareness of Wellbeing Benefits

We are raising public awareness of the many benefits of dancing Argentine tango with a specific project with Parkinson’s UK

Raising Awareness

The initiative is being delivered by an expert volunteer group working in collaboration with professional organisations, including Parkinson’s UK and local healthcare partners. The project does not make clinical claims and does not provide medical advice or treatment. Its focus is on participation, community, and quality of life. For some people living with Parkinson’s, taking part in dance activities can offer a positive and enjoyable way to engage in movement and social life, alongside existing healthcare and support.

As part of the initiative, UKATA will produce and share a series of Practitioner Toolkits designed for the UK tango community. These resources will support dance teachers and assistants to offer safe, welcoming, and well-signposted tango participation in wellbeing and community settings, including those linked to health and social care.

The toolkits will:

  • promote inclusive and person-centred approaches to dance participation

  • provide guidance on safeguarding, consent, and risk awareness

  • clarify appropriate language and boundaries, avoiding medical or therapeutic claims

  • support collaboration with healthcare charities and local wellbeing services

UKATA emphasises that the initiative is not a clinical programme and is not intended to replace medical care or rehabilitation. The project is about enjoyment, confidence, and community. We want to support people to access dance participation in a way that feels safe, respectful, and inclusive, while working closely with healthcare and charity partners to ensure clear boundaries and shared understanding.

UKATA has created an initial thought piece on Argentine Tango and Wellbeing. This thought piece can be found in this document
